The most frightening thing (except perhaps for the people stuck inside) about the January 6th US Capitol intrusion is not the symbolic act of threatening people, violating and in part vandalizing this iconic building but the similarities to what happened in Nazi Germany.
How can a leader feel so empowered that he thinks he is above the law and how can he be allowed to drag such a sizable portion of the population into primeval herd behavior.
Hitler got the power to do what he did because enough ordinary people as well as enough power hungry people supported him.
There will always be radical people but for so many politicians to ride a fishy political ticket and not stand up to unreason is despicable.
The German people are ashamed of what happened in Nazi Germany and that shame is being carried on for generations. We are lucky this time that this was not a warring president but can not say that he came in peace and especially not that he went in peace first time around.
In a properly functioning democracy there will be shifts in power. One party may lose power and later regain that power unless a party abuses its power so much that people will say never again.
Now is the time to put things right for the party to distance itself from any Trump policies that go too far and from those that do not have the courage to stand up for what is right.
At the same we need to find ways to bridge the gap between the educated elite on the west and east coast and the hard working people all over America and the racial divide.
Remember most of the people voting for Trump (original family name Drumpf) were not voting for him but for a party. Only a minority albeit sizeable minority were specifically voting for him. There was also a sizable minority of Republicans that voted against Trump.
